Treepisode introduces new concepts like Vanas, Trees, Echoes, and Time Capsules. This guide explains what everything means and walks you through every action step by step.
Section 1
Treepisode uses a forest metaphor for personal growth. Here's what each term means:
Vana is a Sanskrit word meaning 'forest.' In Treepisode, your Vana is your private digital garden where all your trees live. You name it during onboarding — it could be 'My Sacred Grove,' 'Sunshine Garden,' or anything meaningful to you.
Each tree represents something you want to nurture. It could be a gratitude practice, a fitness habit, a learning goal, or a collection of memories. Trees grow through 5 stages as you add echoes to them.
An echo is a voice recording, text reflection, or photo that you add to a tree. Each echo is like a 'watering' — it nourishes the tree and helps it grow. Echoes are numbered as episodes (Episode 1, Episode 2, etc.).
When you 'water' a tree, you're adding a new echo to it. You can water with text (up to 500 characters), a photo (from camera or gallery), or a voice recording (up to 5 minutes).
Trees progress through 5 stages based on total echoes: Seed (0-2), Sapling (3-9), Young Tree (10-24), Blooming Tree (25-49), and Fruit-Bearing Tree (50+). Each stage shows a different visual.
Your streak counts how many days in a row you've added an echo to a specific tree. Watering multiple times on the same day counts as one day. Missing a day resets the streak to 1.
Any echo can be turned into a time capsule by setting an unlock date. Until that date arrives, the echo shows a lock icon and countdown timer instead of its content.
The Constellation view shows all your trees arranged in a circle. Each node is sized by echo count and colored by category. It gives you a bird's-eye view of your entire growth journey.
A Family Vana is a shared garden where multiple people can each plant their own trees. Trees are grouped by member, so you can see everyone's growth side by side.
Section 2
Treepisode uses a simple, passwordless login. Here's how to set up your account:
Open the app
Download Treepisode from the App Store or Google Play, or visit the web portal.
Enter your email
On the login screen, type your email address and tap 'Continue with Email.' You'll receive a one-time verification code.
Enter the verification code
Check your inbox for the code (it may take a minute). Enter the 6-8 digit code on the verification screen and tap 'Verify.'
Create your profile
Choose a spirit avatar from 12 emoji options (tree, leaf, butterfly, moon, etc.). Enter a display name (at least 2 characters) and an optional bio (up to 150 characters).
Name your forest
This is your Vana naming ceremony. Choose a meaningful name for your personal garden — something like 'Enchanted Grove' or 'Morning Light Forest.' This becomes the title of your garden.
You're in!
You'll land on your empty garden. Tap the 'Plant' button to create your first tree.
Section 3
Trees are the heart of Treepisode. Each one represents something you want to nurture.
Tap the green 'Plant' button
On your garden screen, tap the floating action button (green circle with 'Plant' label) at the bottom right.
Enter a title
Give your tree a name. Examples: 'Daily Gratitude,' 'Learn Spanish,' '100 Push-ups Challenge,' 'Mom's Recipes.' Keep it short and meaningful.
Choose a category
Select one of 6 categories. Each has its own color and emoji: • Gratitude — things you're thankful for • Habit — daily or regular practices • Learning — skills and knowledge • Health — physical and mental wellness • Creativity — art, writing, music, ideas • Custom — anything else
Tap 'Plant Tree'
Your tree appears in your garden as a Seed. It will grow as you add echoes to it.
Tip: You can plant as many trees as you want. Some people have one tree for gratitude and another for fitness. Others create a tree for each month of the year.
Section 4
Watering is how you grow your trees. Each watering creates an Echo — a permanent episode in your tree's story.
Tap a tree in your garden
This opens the tree detail screen showing all its echoes.
Tap the 'Water' button
The green floating action button at the bottom right.
Select the 'Text' tab
This is the first tab in the watering sheet.
Write your reflection
Type up to 500 characters. It could be a gratitude note, a lesson learned, a daily check-in, or anything else.
Tap 'Water with Text'
Your echo is saved. The tree's episode count increases and growth stage may advance.
Open the watering sheet on any tree
Tap the tree, then tap the 'Water' button.
Select the 'Photo' tab
The second tab in the watering sheet.
Choose a source
Tap 'Camera' to take a new photo, or 'Gallery' to pick an existing one. The photo is automatically compressed for fast upload.
Preview and confirm
You'll see a preview. Tap the X to remove and try again, or tap 'Water with Photo' to save.
Open the watering sheet on any tree
Tap the tree, then tap the 'Water' button.
Select the 'Voice' tab
The third tab in the watering sheet.
Tap the microphone to start recording
A timer will show how long you've been recording. Maximum duration is 5 minutes — recording auto-stops when time is up.
Tap the stop button when done
You'll see a preview with play/pause and the recording duration.
Review or discard
Play back your recording to check it. Tap the discard button to re-record, or tap 'Water with this voice note' to save.
Tip: Voice echoes are saved as high-quality m4a audio files. They're compressed for efficient storage but sound great on playback.
Section 5
Voice is the most personal way to water your trees. Here are some tips:
Section 6
Time capsules are echoes that stay locked until a specific date. They're perfect for surprises, future letters, and milestone celebrations.
Start watering any tree
Open the watering sheet (text, photo, or voice — any type works).
Toggle 'Time Capsule' on
You'll see a toggle switch at the bottom of the watering sheet. Turn it on.
Pick an unlock date
A date picker appears. Choose any date in the future (minimum 1 day from now). Examples: next birthday, anniversary, New Year's Day.
Create the echo as usual
Write your text, take a photo, or record your voice. Then tap the water button.
It's locked!
The echo now shows a lock icon, the unlock date, and a countdown timer. The content is hidden until the date arrives.
Time capsules unlock automatically. When you open the tree after the unlock date has passed, the app checks and unlocks any due capsules. The content becomes visible immediately. There's also a daily server-side check that batch-unlocks all expired capsules.
Tip: Idea: Record a voice message for a loved one's birthday 6 months in advance. Set the unlock date to their birthday. When the day comes, the message reveals itself in their family tree.
Section 7
Your garden is more than a list — it's a visual representation of your progress.
| Stage | Echoes needed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Seed | 0 - 2 | You just planted. The beginning. |
| Sapling | 3 - 9 | Taking root. You're building momentum. |
| Young Tree | 10 - 24 | Growing strong. Consistency is paying off. |
| Blooming | 25 - 49 | Flourishing. Your dedication is visible. |
| Fruit-Bearing | 50+ | Mastery. You've built something lasting. |
Tap any tree card to see:
Tap any echo to open it full-screen
The echo detail screen shows the full content.
Tap the delete button
A red delete button is at the bottom of the screen.
Confirm deletion
A dialog asks you to confirm. Once deleted, the echo is gone and the tree's growth stage recalculates.
Section 8
The Constellation is a visual map of your entire forest. It's the second tab in the bottom navigation.
Tap the Constellation tab
The sparkle icon in the bottom navigation bar (second from left).
See your stats
A stats bar at the top shows: total trees, total echoes, and your best streak across all trees.
Explore the constellation
Your trees are arranged in a circle. Each node's size reflects how many echoes it has. Colors represent categories.
Read the legend
Below the constellation, a color-coded legend shows which colors map to which categories. Only categories with active trees are shown.
Tap any node
Tapping a tree node takes you directly to that tree's detail screen.
Tip: The constellation is a beautiful way to see your growth at a glance. Trees with many echoes appear as large, glowing nodes. New seeds are small dots. Over time, your constellation becomes richer and more complex.
Section 9
Family Vanas are shared forests where each family member plants their own trees in a common space.
Go to the Family tab
The third tab (family icon) in the bottom navigation.
Tap 'Create Family Garden'
If you have no family vanas yet, you'll see this button. Otherwise, scroll to the bottom for 'Create Another Garden.'
Enter a name
Give your family forest a meaningful name. Examples: 'The Sharma Grove,' 'Ranchi Family Forest,' 'Our Shared Garden.'
Add invite emails (optional)
Type email addresses of family members you want to invite. Type each email and tap 'Add.' You can add multiple.
Tap 'Create Family Garden'
The family vana is created and you're taken to the shared garden view.
Open the family forest
Tap on the family vana card in the Family tab.
Tap the invite icon in the top right
An invite dialog appears.
Enter the person's email
They must already have a Treepisode account with that email.
Tap 'Add Member'
They'll see the family forest in their Family tab on their next visit.
Trees are grouped by member. Each section has a header showing the member's avatar, name ("[Name]'s Grove"), and their tree count. You can see everyone's growth side by side. To plant in the family forest, tap the 'Plant' button — the tree goes into the shared space under your name.
Section 10
The Profile tab (rightmost in the bottom navigation) shows your account information.
Section 11
Treepisode has a web companion at your Vercel-hosted URL. Here's what you can do:
Tip: The full garden experience — planting trees, recording voice echoes, watering — is currently available on the mobile app. The web portal will expand with browsing and playback features in future updates.
Section 12
Treepisode offers a generous free tier with core features. Premium unlocks unlimited trees, extended voice, seasonal themes, and more. See our plans.
Yes. Sign in with the same email on the mobile app and web portal. Your account and data sync across both.
Your streak resets to 1 when you water next, but there's no punishment. Your tree's growth stage stays where it is — it never goes backwards. Growth is about cumulative effort, not perfection.
By default, your personal Vana is private. Only you can see it. Trees in a Family Vana are visible to all members of that family forest.
Up to 5 minutes per recording. The recording auto-stops when the maximum duration is reached.
Currently, you can delete individual echoes from a tree. Full tree deletion will be available in a future update.
Currently, the person needs to have an existing Treepisode account with that email. Ask them to sign up first, then invite them.
Your data is stored securely on Supabase servers with row-level security. Each user can only access their own data (and shared family data they're a member of).
Six categories: Gratitude, Habit, Learning, Health, Creativity, and Custom. Custom lets you create trees for anything that doesn't fit the other categories.
Treepisode adds visual growth (trees evolve as you journal), voice-first recording, time capsules, family sharing, and a constellation view. It turns journaling from a text file into a living, growing experience.
